Lights 4 Learning
Originally launched to reduce disruptions to children’s education during the COVID-19 lockdown, Lights 4 Learning has become one of Let There Be Light International’s signature programs, supporting students, parents, and teachers in off-grid communities by distributing safe solar lights with culturally relevant books.
How Lights 4 Learning Brightens Students’ Futures

1. Community Literacy Sessions
Our local partners work with schools to host literacy sessions where students participate in interactive reading activities, parents discuss how to support reading development at home, and teachers are introduced as ongoing program and literacy champions.

2. Solar Light and Book Distribution
Students receive a solar light and an age-appropriate book. This pairing of safe solar lights with culturally relevant books addresses two of the biggest barriers to evening reading and learning: lack of access to safe lighting and reading materials.

3. Education Continues After Dark
With their new solar lights and books, children can continue reading into the night, read aloud and learn with siblings and friends, and more easily receive support from parents. Solar lights are brightening academic futures in off-grid communities.
Testimonies

“I am happy to receive a solar light. At home together with my sisters, we have been using a Tadooba [kerosene lamp] to get light at night whenever we want to do revision. Sometimes Dad tells us to stop because the kerosene will be finished! But now with the solar light, we shall be able to do our revision till we are done. Thank you for giving me this solar lamp.”
-Jane, 11-year-old student
“This is wonderful! My children will no longer have to beg to use the only kerosene lamp at home. I shall no longer have to buy wax candles, and my money will be committed to other household needs. I can peacefully sleep and leave my children to continue with their studies without fear of burning themselves. Thank you so much for helping a single mother.”
-Robinah, 46-year-old mom
“I feel overwhelmed by receiving this solar light. The challenge has been requesting my parents to buy me a candle every day for me to obtain light at night. But now with this solar lamp, I shall no longer bother them. Thanks to the donors for this generosity.”
-Madinah, 13-year-old student
